JetDrive Defragmentation Suite is more than just a fine Disk Manager, it is a complete PC Optimization Suite. Developed by the relatively-unknown German software developer Abelssoft, the current version is simply named 2009 and it is built to work just fine under Windows XP, Vista as well as Windows 7.

The JetDrive suite has modules for checking and correcting drive errors, defragmenting the Windows Registry and Main Memory and deleting temporary files, apart from its excellent Disk Defragmenting module.

JetDrive comes in two versions - Professional and Ultimate, with a free 15-day Test version available as well. Our review is based on the 15-day Trial Version. Here are the pricing and features of each version:

If one or more drives are heavily fragmented, JetDrive starts up automatically at Boot Time and displays the screen shown here to the right. Once JetDrive starts up, you get to the screen shown to the right here. This is the screen that you get, when you start JetDrive manually as well.

Click on the "Start JetDrive" button, to run JetDrive.

At the very outset, you cannot but help admire the beauty of JetDrive's User Interface. We are hard pressed to name a more beautiful piece of software! Shown to the right here is JetDrive's Splash Screen. Apart from mere beauty, JetDrive has all the features that you need from a high-end Disk Management suite as well!

SplashScreen

When the Splash Screen disappears, you get to the screen shown to the right here. The following four modules of JetDrive may be invoked from this screen:

  1. Drive Fragmentation - for checking and defragmenting all drives

  2. Registry Fragmentation - for defragmenting the Windows Registry

  3. Check Drives - for checking and correcting Hard Disk errors

  4. Memory Defragmentation - for defragmenting the Main Memory

Click on the Drive Fragmentation module, to invoke the Wizard, shown to the right here. You may select all drives that you want defragmented, in the next screen. For now, click on the Next button, to get to the screen shown next.

When you get to this screen, you are shown all your drives, as well as JetDrive's recommendations for defragging each of them. In the screenshot, you can see that while JetDrive recommends that our C-Drive need not be defragmented, it highly recommends that we defrag our D-Drive.

We regularly use Norton Speed Disk to defragment both our drives. However, each Disk Management utility has its own defragmentation algorithm and therefore, it is only reasonable to expect that different disk defragmenters have different opinions about the state of fragmentation of your drives!

JetDriveDefrag

Select the drive(s) that you want to defragment, from the screen shown above. When you click Next, you get to the screen shown here, to the right. From here, you may select one or all of the following options:

  1. Defragment Memory

  2. Clean Temporary Files

  3. Check the chosen drive

You may also choose not to run any of these three and instead, proceed to the next screen too.

The next screen has more options for you to choose, namely,

  1. Defragment Registry

  2. Defragment protected Windows System files

  3. Turn off Computer after all selected tasks are completed

Again, you may choose one, all or none of the above options. When you have made your choice of options, click on the Next button.

Here is the final Defragmentation Wizard screen. Interestingly, the description is rather oddly-worded as, "To start defragmentation, click Finish". We would have preferred "To start defragmentation, click Start", and a Start Button, instead of a Finish Button!

Its a tiny crib anyways, though we do hope the guys at Abelssoft make this correction...

If you had chosen one or more options from the two screens, your JetDrive Summary screen would look different. Here, to the right, is a sample Summary Screen, when we had selected the following multiple options:

  1. Clean Temp Directories

  2. Check Drives

  3. Defrag Protected Windows files on Drive D

Press the Finish button to start JetDrive perform your selected options...

(Click for larger image)

Now, all along, you had a second, larger, dormant window. The moment you click on the Finish button in the previous screenshot, the hitherto-dormant window becomes active and the smallet window that had been active disappears altogether. We wouldn't be bothered about this interplay of windows on most other software, but with JetDrive we thought we would give it a special mention, since it has one of the loveliest User Interfaces we have ever seen and this screen-switching is, well - unexpected...

JetDrive begins its tasks, as per the sequence you were shown in the screen reproduced right above and to the right. When Defragmentation commences, you get to see the screen shown here, to the right.

Note that defragmentation is a time-consuming process that may even take hours, if fragmentation is high.

While your Hard Disk is being defragmented, you will notice changing color patterns, as more and more files get defragmented, leading to a gradual reduction in the Red  Blocks and a corresponding increase in the number of Green Blocks.

Did you miss out the Blue Blocks and the little puppy? Watch him, as he re-arranges the blue block and then looks up to you for your appreciation! You may also choose to watch the puppy, as it digs out a bone from a hole - the choice is yours... The clip will soon become a little repetitive though...

When all chosen tasks are completed, JetDrive lets you view a Report. This high-quality, beautiful report clearly shows you the basic facts about your partition - namely the percentage used and free, when the Analysis was done (date, week-day and time), name of the analyzed volume, type of file system (NTFS or FAT), Free and used Disk Space in (GB), as well as the Cluster information - total number of clusters on the drive/ partition and the number of free and used clusters on it.

In the screenshot to the left, you can see the above details about our Drive D. You have the option of quick printing the Report on your default Printer, printing it on a specific Printer on your Network, e-Mailing it as well as exporting it to a select few formats like PDF, HTML, MHT or saving it as an image file.

You have the following additional options for the Report as well:

  1. Use a different color for the report background

  2. Use a Text or Picture Watermark with various positioning and stretch/ tile options

The final screenshot, once your Hard Disk is defragmented, is shown to the right. The puppy dozes, now that it has neatly placed all its Blue Blocks (and your Green Blocks!)

To summarize our experience with Abelssoft jetDrive;

JetDrive gave us significantly better results with respect to the following:

  1. Drive Defragmentation

  2. Registry Defragmentation

  3. Windows System Files Defragmentation

ThumbsUp

It did not give us any noticeable improvement, with respect to Cleaning Temporary files, though this is because we use the excellent freeware program CCleaner from Piriform Software. We also regularly use Elcor Software's PremiumBooster for Windows Registry Repair and Optimization and Norton SystemWorks for defragmenting our drives. For the purposes of testing, we avoided using PremiumBooster or Norton SystemWorks for about a month, so that Abelssoft JetDrive could work on a sub-optimal Windows Registry and fragmented drives!

The Bottom Line is, we have no hesitation in awarding Abelssoft JetDrive our Thumbs Up, for its excellent delivery on promises made!

One crib though: the program does not have an uninstall option. Yes, you can cleanly remove it by going through Control Panel - Add/ Remove Programs, but shouldn't a top-notch program provide its users an automatic uninstall option?
