Maxthon is a little-known Browser that puzzles us. For, it is as good as any of its better-known brethren, packs all the features found in the 'big' Browsers (and a few extremely nifty ones of its own!) and is free, like every one of the thirteen Browsers we have reviewed. It is so little known that we too did not look seriously at it until very, very recently... We regret not having reviewed it much earlier...

The Browsers niche is definitely a big one today and any challenger - however good - needs to build up share carefully. Why Maxthon is not known more widely than what it is, is what has us puzzled.

Maxthon is unique in terms of its looks (but for its twin, Avant Browser and Avant's Mozilla cousin Orca, and the other IE 7-based TheWorld Browser, that is!) Again, Maxthon loads up in pretty nifty time as well, just like Avant, TheWorld and Orca. Yet, the look and feel is familiar right from the word go: it is comfortably reassuring, while with Safari, one feels just a little unsure about where the feature you want would be - at least initially...

Although Apple Safari is the 'doe-eyed' beauty amongst Browsers, Maxthon is lovely in a different way too! It looks much, much better than Internet Explorer, Firefox, Flock, CometBird, Chrome or SeaMonkey. Our first impression was that a Browser such as Maxthon should NOT be unknown and unheard of, for it is a well-rounded, feature-rich Browser. However, the converse is that it does not cater to any particular segment of the browsing public. Thus while Flock has the Social Networking segment, Firefox the Web Development and Online Marketing segments, Safari the Mac-using segment and so on, Maxthon has none to call its own. Our opinion is that whittling down the market into segments and catering to one or more segments is the best approach to gaining market and mind share!

Since Maxthon is NOT based on the Mozilla Engine, the plug-ins and add-ons that work with Mozilla-based Browsers do not work with Maxthon. However, to tilt the scales a little in its favor, Maxthon does have a core of fans worldwide, who have developed a fair number of add-ons and plug-ins for Maxthon. These cover most of the feature sets that most users look for. In fact, Maxthon is very, very customizable! Some of the Maxthon customization features we have discovered are;

Our Focus

The ability to combine the Refresh and Stop Buttons. Browsers either combine the two or keep them separate; Maxthon lets YOU decide!

Ability to make your own Keyboard Shortcuts, i.e., make virtually any keyboard combination start up a pre-defined action

Similarly, ability to create limitless number of your own Mouse Click and Mouse Gesture actions. We have not yet checked out this feature, though it does sound very interesting!

Ability to enable/ disable Multi-thread Tab Support. If enabled, each Tab works within its container, unaffected by happenings in other tabs. This is something Google claims to have introduced for the first time in Chrome, but nevertheless, was already present in Internet Explorer 8 Beta itself. Clearly, this is implemented in Maxthon too, while the others are still working on it...

UserAgent String can be set to read any of the following Pre-defined Browsers:

  • IE 6.0

  • IE 7.0

  • Firefox 2.0

  • Opera 9.0

  • Safari 2.0

  • Nokia N90

  • Motorola RAZR V3r

  • Blackberry 7100i

This works just fine - Maxthon correctly returned the set value, when we ran a simple Javascript asking it to name the Browser and screen resolution. However, when we set it up to display Maxthon 2.1 as the Browser, it returned the value Internet Explorer 2.1 instead! The default setting too displays the value Internet Explorer 7 - trust this will be corrected in the next version. While this may not be a feature that affects casual surfers, web developers and online marketing professionals are quite likely to find it useful

  1. Provision of a customizable 'Boss Key'. A 'Boss Key' is a combination of keys that you can press, to hide the current Tab - typically a great help if you are goofing off at work and the Boss steps in unheralded - a situation most of us would already have faced a few times by now! The Maxthon Boss Key hides the entire Browser window including all Tabs - it does not minimize to the Windows Task Bar, it simply disappears! To bring Maxthon (including your 'Secret Tab') back, all you have to do is press the Boss Key combo once again!

  2. Ability to use Microsoft Java Virtual Machine or your preferred Java Virtual Machine

  3. Feature called Web Accelerator accelerates named sites: these sites may not be checked rigorously, before scripts therein are executed. This is a dubious feature we feel, what with Phishing on the rise. Moreover, we did not observe any significant acceleration in our named website too. Click here to read about the Maxthon Speed Accelerator

  4. Maxthon Website Booster is a feature currently in Beta - we do not know too much about this feature, what it does or just how different it is, from Web Accelerator

  5. The Maxthon Start Page continuously shows Tips at the bottom, to the left of the page. This is a good place to read about Maxthon's numerous extra features!

  6. All these settings need to be saved, before they work: some of them require a restart of Maxthon itself too. Fortunately, even if you close the Maxthon Setup Centre Tab, a pop-up lets you save your settings, obviating the need to open the Setup Centre and changing the settings all over again!

Despite the decent number of add-ins and plug-ins already on display for Maxthon, we were carried away by one feature that is built right into Maxthon. We had never imagined using, say our favorite FTP program, from within a Browser. With Maxthon and its button titled "Addition/Add External Tool", that is exactly what we did! As Web Developers and Online Marketers, we frequently make changes to our website as well as the websites we are developing and therefore, easy access to our FTP program saves us a lot of time each time! We could of course run it from the Desktop or from the Start Menu, spending a lot more time doing it that way! Clearly, this is a great, flexible tool for a number of folks! For example, a Sales professional could run PowerPoint from within Maxthon (and thus access all his sales presentations), an Accounting professional could access his Accounting program from within Maxthon, a professional Photographer could access PhotoShop from within Maxthon and so on - the possibilities are endless! To add to this, you have the option of letting these external programs start with Maxthon, close with Maxthon or start only when you click the icon that sits there right on the Maxthon screen! This is one innovation that we believe will be worth a lot to almost anyone browsing the Internet!

One difference ought to be mentioned - the unique placement of the Standard Menu Bar. The Standard Menu bar is placed at the Right Top of the screen, in contrast to the universal Left Top placement for almost every software created till date! Its not something that you can't get used to quickly, though we feel it should find a mention in a serious review of Maxthon!

We were also pleasantly surprised that Orbit, the software we use for downloading media files from sites, works perfectly well with Maxthon: if anything, it works even more intuitively with Maxthon than with Firefox!

Maxthon starts with the page whose screenshot is shown to the left here. You have the option of searching using Maxthon Search, Yahoo or Google: good enough for most users and uses. To the left of the screen, you have your last-visited Web Pages: our screenshot shows just Maxthon Start. Your Most Visited Favorites are also visible, to the right of the screen. We have blanked out ours and instead, placed lines where the listing would be. You also have Quick Links to the Maxthon Website, Forum and Blog, Maxthon Add-ons, Maxthon Passport, etc.

At the top and just below the Tabs, you have icons for Font Size, Encoding, Content Control and Translation - all features easily available at a click's distance.

At the bottom and to the right, you find icons for the IP Address and the number of Ads blocked, Maxthon Download, Maxthon Smart Accelerator, Force-opening links in the background, Force-opening links in new Tabs, showing/ hiding the Collector (which is a Notepad-like application for copy-pasting text from sites you visit), Ad Blocker settings and Zoom. Quite a handful of features there, isn't it!

The Standard Browser buttons too sports an innovative feature. Left-click the Refresh icon and it does what you expect it to do, namely refresh the current Tab. Right-click it and as the Tooltip tells you, it refreshes ALL Tabs! Similarly, Left-clicking the Stop button stops the current Tab and Right-clicking it stops all Tabs. Right-click on any Tab and you can close all Blank and Error Tabs in one fell swoop! If all this isn't enough, Right-click on any Tab and you have the option of closing all Tabs to the LEFT of the clicked Tab or close all Tabs to the Right of the clicked Tab! Nifty, isn't it, for web designers checking out multiple pages for how they display on Maxthon?

It is now time to discuss what we would like to see, in future editions of Maxthon. Here is the list...

  1. We have always stressed the need for TWO layers of security - one to be provided by the Browser itself, the other to be provided by top-of-the-line third-party Security solutions that plug right into the Browser. While Flock has Web of Trust (WOT), Firefox and Internet Explorer have the redoubtable Norton Security products Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, etc., plugging right in. Maxthon needs to plug in to such products - preferably the Norton products itself, for these are Number 1 products in their niche!

  2. We notice delays in running Java scripts under Maxthon. This is probably because of the strict script checks integrated into Maxthon. But then although the strictness is welcome, the extra time isn't! In fact, we are quite impressed already with Maxthon's in-built security, called Maxthon Guardian. You get adequate warnings whenever you carry out potentially dangerous stuff like downloading executable files, etc., as well as the option to forever block the operation, run the operation once or whitelist the operation forever. Neat, yet one needs to be careful using them: you wouldn't want to whitelist something in a hurry, when you ought to have blacklisted it instead! Worse, you might not latch on to your blunder until it is too late! This is a problem with all personal Firewalls and therefore we will not dwell too much on just how easy it is to do something wrong under Maxthon Guardian, if you are careless!

  3. We sorely miss the facility to check Google PR and Alexa Rankings of visited sites, in Maxthon! You MUST develop a plug-in like SEOQuest that does this job - Web Developers and Online Marketers CANNOT do without such a utility! The Maxthon Forum mambers mention a number of plug-ins - we are in the process of reviewing them - do stay tuned!

We visited the Maxthon Forum to understand what Maxthon Smart Acceleration (MSA) was all about. Here is what we gleaned:

Why and what is MSA?
For long time users have been hoping for Maxthon's rich features together with the speed of Opera. We treasure all feedbacks from our users, and have been actively researching on speed improvement. The latest MSA is the result of the researches. It consists of many optimizations made on network transmission efficiency, browser cache mechanism, and contents interpretation intelligence, with reference to general user habits. Currently the MSA has 2 acceleration modes. The default
acceleration mode (activated in Setup Center > Advanced > Enable Web Accelerator, which is on by default) aims at trouble free browsing and uses a relatively conservative approach for good browsing speed without causing problems. The super acceleration mode (activated on per site basis through the status bar button with "flash" icon) aims at maximum browsing speed and will improve the browsing speed very noticeably, especially for frequently visited sites and sites with slow connection.

When should MSA be used and which mode to use?
Normally users can activate the default acceleration mode for better browsing speed. For users who frequently visit certain sites with slow connection, they may consider using the super acceleration mode for these sites.
What is the drawback, if any, of the MSA?
With super acceleration mode enabled, some web pages may not be always updated. This usually happens in specific sites. Users can selectively enable the super acceleration mode only for sites which do not exhibit this problem.
Under what circumstances would the speed improvement not be noticeble?
The MSA is designed to work most effectively in websites which have slow connection and are frequently visited. The speed improvement may not be noticeable for users having fast connection or visiting mostly sites with fast connection. Also the speed improvement may not be noticeable for sites visited sparsely.
Is there any advantage of the MSA to web administrators?
Since the MSA ensure more efficient use of internet connection and browser cache, it can reduce pressure on servers. Servers can serve more visitors and serve visitors faster. Also web administrators can save costs with more efficient use of server bandwidth. Last but not least, we welcome any feedback or suggestion on our forum.

Take you back where you were...
