Norton 360 is a GREAT AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and PC Security product. While we wholeheartedly recommend Norton 360 to protect your PC effectively against Viruses, Spyware, Phishing and other security threats, we DO NOT recommend its Registry Optimizer or Hard Disk Management modules, for, the Hard Disk Management capabilities of Norton 360 are neglegible. If you are looking for a Hard Disk Manager, we recommend Norton SystemWorks, which is the BEST all-round Computer Utility with the BEST Hard Disk Management features.
To many Computer users - including us at WellOiledPC, Norton products were life saviors during the days of DOS. Today too, Norton (now Symantec Inc.) continues to produce the best security products - be it Norton Antivirus, Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, etc. However, they are now available in a rather confusing array of products. For example, Norton Disk Doctor, which let you repair Hard Disks before they failed - even in the days of DOS, is now bundled along with Norton SystemWorks. Similarly, Speed Disk, which defragmented Hard Disks in the DOS era, is also a part of Norton SystemWorks. Thus, you need to purchase at least 2 Norton products, for managing your Computer, namely;
The second category of Norton products is for online protection, Passwords Management, protection from Phishing and infected websites, secure Auto-fill of Web Forms, etc. These are security features without which you SHOULD NOT attempt to even switch on your Computer, if it is connected to a Network or the Internet! This is where the confusion starts, for Symantec have not one, but THREE products, all of which offer many security features! Some of the offline optimization features have been incorporated into Windows XP and Vista - and now, Windows 7 (for example, checking and repairing lost clusters and defragmenting the Hard Disk), while other features of the Norton SystemWorks are available in other, newer products as well. For example, PerfectDisk does a very good job of defragmenting Hard Disks running Windows XP or Vista. And for Registry cleaning and optimization, there is Elcor's PremiumBooster and Advanced Registry Doctor, both excellent products!
Symantec has however grown from strength to strength meanwhile, building up a formidable array of top-of-the-line security products, in line with its vision of making the best security products for Computers. Towards this end, they acquired a few companies that made excellent Computer Security products: their take-over of Dr. Solomon's AntiVirus product helped them nose ahead of McAfee, which was, until then, the top AntiVirus product.
We believe that Symantec PC Security products are the best on offer currently and that they will continue to rule the roost for many years to come! We present our review of Norton 360 Version 4, the latest version, in the rest of this page.
