We did not know what Orca was: it was a Google search that turned up the following reference in Wikipedia, the brief description reading, "The Killer Whale or Orca (Orcinus orca), less commonly, Blackfish or Seawolf, ... Orcinus orca is the sole species in the genus Orcinus, one of the many ...".

Besides the Killer Whale, other assorted hits shared the first page of Google search results, including the Ontario Retired Community Association, something about a freeware utility to edit the insides of Windows .msi files, an e-Government initiative by the same abbreviation and the website of a New Zealand-based manufacturer of wetsuits and body wear... Nothing at all about a Browser by the same name...

Therefore if you haven't heard of a Browser called Orca, it isn't surprising! All the same, Orca is yet another Browser from the Avant group, with the difference that it runs Firefox Add-ons! Now that is interesting, since both Avant and it's twin Maxthon use arch rival Internet Explorer's Browser Engine, thus completely removing them from the ambit of Mozilla add-ons! On checking, we found that a number of Mozilla add-ons do indeed work with Orca, including Web of Trust (WOT)! However a number of them find no mention too - for example, FireFTP does not appear to work under Orca.

Orca is blazingly quick to start up - almost as fast as Avant. Like Avant again, it has no hesitation/ issues working with other Browsers. In the short time we have used it, it has not crashed so far. Nor does it distort web pages or omit elements from web pages.

Orca is customizable in many, many ways, including mouse gestures. While the approach to Orca is indeed a refreshing change - one that seeks to present the best of both worlds to users, we need to work more with it, before we can pass a firm opinion on its capabilities.

Download Squad's website has this to say about Orca: "Orca Browser is to Firefox 3 what Avant Browser is to Internet Explorer". While we stop short of such stuff, Orca has indeed made a fine start. Now it needs add-ons for extra functionality and features that are built right into Firefox, like the ability to close recently-closed Tabs, etc. Its ability to actually catch up with Firefox appears to be a long - very long shot at the moment!

We trust it continues to innovate and grow - everyone needs a Browser today, therefore there is space for multiple browsers! We like what we have seen of Orca and wish it goes on to become the Killer Whale it is named after!
